Congressman Jefferson votes for the H.R. 3997, Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. William Jefferson voted to provide a 2 billion dollar tax relief package for military families. The Heroes Earning Assistance and Relief Tax Act (HEART Act) is a bill designed to help military families working through long and frequent deployments that often create financial hardship.

"As representatives of this nation, we must be dedicated to protecting and aiding those that protect and aid us on a daily basis," said Jefferson. "These tax provisions, it is hoped, will help to alleviate some of the hardships faced by the families that stand behind our veterans and current active duty and reserve members of our armed forces."

The bill makes past tax relief permanent for military families, including relief under the Earned Income Tax Credit and will supply eligibility for veterans to obtain low-interest home loans. It also includes tax benefits for other high risk professions such as firefighters and Peace Corps volunteers.
